Customer Specific Orders and Low-Number Orders
Wholesale prices vary depending on the distributor, and POD orders are on a no-return basis, but since orders are usually made specifically at customers' requests, or only one or two books of each title are stocked in shops until you get a good sense of popularity among your local footfall, the lower discounts matter little as you make your money by selling through your stock or using the odd "leftover" book for giveaways, as part of various promos, or as loss-leaders to attract customers.
